چکیده

Following G. T. Fechner (1966), thresholds have been conceptualized as the amount of intensity needed to transition between mental states, such as between a states of unconsciousness and consciousness. With the advent of the theory of signal detection, however, discrete-state theory and the corresponding notion of threshold have been discounted. Consequently, phenomena such as subliminal priming and perception have a reduced theoretical basis. The authors propose a process-neutral definition of threshold that allows for graded perception and activation throughout the system. Thresholds correspond to maximum stimulus intensities such that the distribution of mental states does not differ from that when an appropriate baseline stimulus is presented. In practice, thresholds are maximum intensities such that the probability distribution on behavioral events does not differ from that from baseline. These thresholds, which the authors call task thresholds, may be estimated with modified item response psychometric measurement models.

Multi-objective Optimization of Stirling Heat Engine Using Gray Wolf Optimization Algorithm (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The use of meta-heuristic optimization methods have become quite generic in the past two decades. This paper provides a theoretical investigation to find optimum design parameters of the Stirling heat engines using a recently presented nature-inspired method namely the gray wolf optimization (GWO). This algorithm is utilized for the maximization of the output power/thermal efficiency as well as...

Division of Labor and Structuration Theory: A Comparative and Theoretical Analysis of Marx’s and Durkheim’s Theories as the Early Approaches to Structuration Theory

To the extent that a society is to work, there exist a need for a cooperative process, including Weber’s and Merton’s note of common means and goals. But at the same time, there exist no societal process without involving conflict; (conflict in a dynamic and dialectical sense.) Dealing with this problematic situation the emergence of “division of labor”, as a compulsive social differentiation, ...

The lterative Nature of the Engineering Design Process: a Telescopic Revision Model (RESEARCH NOTE)

The satisfying of human needs through designing technical objects requires the compromisation and settling of various conflicting criteria at different stages of the engineering design process. The need for back and forth adjustment of design specifications, concept finding, and design embodiment can be considered to be carried out in a telescopic review fashion. The present study is concerned ...
